You see evidence of it everywhere. Driving down the road, is it moral to even look at your phone? It’s the chewing gum, spit out in the parking lot or sidewalk as a middle finger to us all.
mo·ral·i·ty- noun; Principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior.
Is being good our default nature? How may times must a toddler be told no?
Litter, is illegal and all 50 of these great United States. But yet I can't go down any Street, Boulevard, Lane, Road or Avenue and not expect to find it. As a matter of fact, it is surprising when it's not there. Not because someone didn’t litter, more than likely someone else picked it up. We are all so numb to even seeing it, we just go on about our lives because it is the norm.
So why, even though we have made laws against it, do we still find all this litter? Morality is a choice, we choose to act morally. I feel like, if I had to roomful of people and asked, who littered today? No one would respond in the affirmative.
I found this sign on the side of the road. It had been there for months. I assume it had been hit by car knocked over and eventually run over with a mower. It is so mangled that if you've never seen one before you may not know what it says. It used to pronounce a $1000 fine for breaking the law of littering. I found it ironic that the sign itself had become litter.
The trash is what I have collected in my yard. Is it the trash's fault for being there? Can I sue Coca-Cola, Burger King any of these corporations for providing the opportunity, circumstance and the occasion? Of course not as ridiculous, but I've heard this argument made against gun manufacturers.
What we have is a people problem. I don't have solutions, only questions. But I don't see how more laws and politics or the media will be able to solve this. Is it religion? All any of us can do everyday is chose good and right actions. I'm not sure that last sentence applies. Can we even define good and right anymore?
