In a general election year, there will be a new poll everyday saying, with certainty that they have no idea what is going on and here are some numbers. Who does know what is going on? With remarkable accuracy, people voting with their money, mask sales of the candidates at Spirit Halloween have been a reliable indicator.

Spirit Halloween is a large seasonal Halloween retailer, that I’m sure most people have seen pop up in the fall. Since 1996 they have publicized there “Spirit Halloween Presidential Index” in the days following Halloween. The index shows the number of sales for Halloween masks for both Democratic and Republican presidential candidates.

  • In 2016, Donald Trump mask sales made up 55% of the total
  • In both 2008 and 2012, Barack Obama made up 60% of mask sales
  • In 2000 and 2004, George W. Bush masks were 57% and 67%
  • In 1996, Bill Clinton had a whopping 71% of sales

Not all of the masks are bought in support of the candidates. A lot of these masks are intended to mock them, and people buy them accordingly.

What does any of this mean? If you want to swing this election, buy a mask. What else, maybe its voodoo. So, in the weeks after the election when we still haven’t settled the actual election, you can look to Spirit Halloween for the winner.
